Basu Chatterjee, a famous Indian director and screenwriter passed away on the early morning of 4th June. He was also known for dialogue writer, producer, director of TV serials, and screenwriter.

Basu Chatterjee was 90 years old at the time of his death. He went on to direct dozens of movies during his lifetime. He received numerous awards for his work in the industry. Basu’s awards include Filmfare Awards and National Awards. Basu’s movies have often been said as way ahead of its time. Unlike other movies that get old with the passing of time, Basu’s movies are said to be evergreen that can be watched anytime.

Rajnigandha (1974)

Movie starring Amol Palekar as Sanjay and Vidya Sinha as Deepa. The movie is about a triangular love story. Deepa finds herself in a situation where she has to make a choice between her former lover Sanjay or her current affair with Navin, played by Dinesh Thakur.

Chitchor (1976)

A romantic musical film that was remade in multiple languages. Meera living in Mumbai sends a letter to her mother and her younger sister saying that she has a match for her sister Geeta, a guy named Vinod. She informs them about Vinod, an engineer and his arrival to their house. The family as informed bring the Vinod home from station. Shortly Geeta falls in love with Vinod. Confusion starts when they discover in another letter from Meera that the arrival of guy that she was about to send for Geeta has been delayed.

Swami (1977)

Award winning movie Swami stars Shabana Azmi in the lead. Shabana, named mini in the movie is survived by her uncle and widowed mother who wants her to get married. Mini falls in love with zamindar’s son. Things starts getting worse when Mini is forced to marry against her wishes to a wheat trader Ghanshyam.

Khatta Meetha (1978 film)

A 1978 hit movie became a base of story in popular Hindi movie released in 2010 Golmaal 3. The plot of the movie starts with Homi, Parsi widower who is about to retire. The widower is survived by 4 sons in his house. Thinking about his family and house the widower decides to marry another widower, Nargis. Nargis is survived by one daughter and two sons. How the family learn to adjust forms the main part of story.

Chakravyuha (1978 film)

The critically acclaimed thriller movie made in 70s stars Rajesh Khanna and Neetu Singh. In this movie Rajesh Khanna plays a man unwillingly drawn into the nest of spies with the future of the country riding on his shoulders. The movie is based on the novel “The Thirty-Nine Steps” by John Buchan.

Hamari Bahu Alka (1982)

Hamari Bahu Alka is based on Bengali story Eto Tuku Basha. In this movie a father very much critical about his son, arranges with a girl named Alka. After the boy’s exam his father makes sure that alka and his son are seperated. The boy and Alka, having fallen in love decided to leave for Bombay. This decision turns out to be bad which they would ultimately regret.

Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986)

The movie stars Anil Kapoor. The movie is based on the satire of the caste system in India. Anil Kapoor as Charan and Amrita Singh as Chameli, they both fall in love. Chameli being the daughter of a coal depot owner and Charan being of a lower caste still fall for each other. The problem starts when they both are exposed and eventually opposed by both the families due to difference in caste. To help them the couple take advice from lawyer Harish. How the lovers make their way out of the difficult situation forms the part of the story.

Basu Chatterjee is survived by 2 daughters. Sonali Bhattacharya and Rupali Guha. Basu’s movies were mostly based on love stories, widowed love stories, how the pair ultimately make their way out.
