Today i.e. on 1st June is the festival of Ganga Dussehra. Ganga Dussehra is celebrated by Hindus in the states of Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar and West Bengal. Particularly in the states where river Ganga flows. Devotees gather on the banks of River Ganges and perform Aarti.
Celebration of Ganga Dussehra is observed in Jyeshtha month according to Hindu calendar. The day of Ganga Dussehra is 10th day of waxing moon in the month of Jyeshtha.
Why Is Ganga Dussehra Celebrated?
River Ganges is carrying and caring human for civilization for thousands of years. Many consider the Ganges as the holiest and even refer to her as Mother Ganga. Legend has it that once Bhagiratha prayed to Lord Shiva to release his ancestors from the curse and have their souls be rested in peace. To get rid of troubled souls Mother Ganga descended down to earth to free all of them on Bhagiratha’s request.
The time when mother Ganga flowed down to earth was on the 10th day of the waxing moon in the month of Jyeshtha. Ganga Dussehra is celebrated to mark the arrival of Ganges to earth.
It is said that bathing in river Ganga particularly in the 10 days of this festival, it helps in the removal of all the sins, and one may also cure his/her diseases or any type of ailments. in Sanskrit, Dasha means ten and hera means destroy. Thus a person can destroy his sins by having a dip 10 times during the 10 day festival of Ganga Dussehra.

Every year millions of devotees assemble on the ghats of river Ganga to perform pooja ceremonies. Cities such as Haridwar, Prayagraj, Patna and Varanasi witness a large gathering of people on the banks of river Ganga.
Celebration of Ganga Dussehra at Home
Due to lockdown across various parts of the country and fear of the spread of highly contagious COVID-19, the celebration across the states were canceled. One can also celebrate Ganga Dussehra at home. For celebrating it at home one has to pray to the sun and then have a bath. While bathing one must sprinkle few drops of river Ganga into the water. While bathing one must continuously chant the following mantra:
“गंगे च यमुने चैव गोदावरी सरस्वती। नर्मदे सिन्धु कावेरी जले अस्मिन् सन्निधिम् कुरु।“
