It was another feather in Viswanathan’s cap. On 30th August, he, along with the team of another couple of Indians won a Gold in Chess Olympiad. This win was special for a number of reasons. Firstly, no Indian before has ever won a Chess Olympiad before. The semi-finalists were from the countries of the USA, Poland, Russia, and Vishwanathan representing India. The finalists were from India and Russia. The match between India and Russia in the final went for a tie.

It was then decided by the Fédération Internationale des Échecs (FIDE) or World Chess Federation, the governing body of international chess competitions, to jointly award the Gold Medal to both the countries i.e. Russia and India.
Viswanathan Anand, not able to control his emotions, tweeted,
“We are the champions !! Congrats Russia!”
The reason why Vishy tweeted “we” is because India and Russia have jointly won the Gold medal of Chess Olympiad.
