In the process to boost India’s tech capabilities, reducing over-reliance on technology from other countries especially China, and improving technological advancements, the government of India has come up with the “app innovation challenge”.

In the app innovation challenge, the best and world-class Indian apps will be selected that are already used by the citizens. Also, the apps must possess the capabilities to become world-class apps in their respective categories. So let’s find out in which categories the “AatmaNirbhar Bharat App Innovation Challenge” has been launched.

The 8 broad categories in which app innovation challenge is being launched are:

  1. Office Productivity & Work from Home
    (for eg. Microsoft Office, WPS Office, GitHub)
  2. Social Networking
    (Instagram, Twitter, LinkedIn)
  3. E-Learning
    (udemy, khan academy)
  4. Entertainment
    (IMDb, Netflix, Zili)
  5. Health & Wellness
    (cure.fir, health mate, calorie counter)
  6. Business including Agritech and Fintech
    (Paytm, PayPal, Walnut)
  7. News
    (Inshorts, WSJ, ANI)
  8. Games
    (candy crush, pubg, GTA)

The primary data suggests that India has been more of a downloading country than uploading country. Meaning, Indian citizens have been downloading more than creating i.e. uploading any apps. MyGov website also suggests that many sub-categories may also be involved within a category.
