Aarogya Setu is an app that requires GPS and Bluetooth to track the infection of coronavirus.
Aarogya Setu doesn’t require data on all the time. It just requires your GPS (to track the movement GPS can work without internet) and Bluetooth access to give you the necessary information from time to time.
Unlike GPS and Bluetooth, data requirements are occasional, so that users’ movements can be sent to the government, in turn they can give us information about how risk-prone we are and our area is so that we can take our decisions and assess the situation.
What is the Aarogya Setu app?
Aarogya Setu app was developed by the National Informatics Centre which falls under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology. Aarogya Setu was released on 2nd April 2020. As I write this article the app has been downloaded over 100+ million times. The app is available on both iOS and Android and it is the fastest ever app to reach 50+ million downloads. It is available in 12 languages.
Aarogya Setu creates the database of users out of a network of information gathered to give an estimation on how many people are affected by coronavirus so that it can alert both the government and citizens on potential victims of coronavirus.
If the victim turns out to be positive, the app uses the information gathered from that victim onto which location he passed on from and other people going on the same path can be alerted and threat can be asserted.
Upon installation, the app asks for basic permissions such as:
-Travel history in the past few days
-If the user is willing to help in the times of need
How does the Aarogya Setu app work?
The function of GPS:
If the user turns out to be positive the data is then sent to the server and plans are made to boost the testing in that particular area if the government thinks so.
The function of Bluetooth:
Bluetooth is the most important aspect of the app. Now we will consider this example – Suppose Mr. A went out to purchase something. Mr. A came across dozens of people. After some days say Mr.B turns out to be corona positive. Now Mr. A having interacted with Mr. B will be alerted since their Bluetooth devices came close to each other. It should also be noted that a person will be alerted if he/she interacted with another person who had Bluetooth on.
Furthermore, Aarogya Setu app is divided into 4 sections:
- Your status
- Self-assessment test
- COVID-19 tracker
It also gives us the live data of people infected with Coronavirus, users who have taken self-assessment test, users who have downloaded the app, users at high risk who came in close contact with Coronavirus patients and users who are unwell, within the radius area of 500m, 2kms, 5kms, and 10kms.
With the app being developed at the earlier stages of infection it should be a major reason behind the stoppage of a pandemic the world has fallen under.
